A freshly renovated Bathroom, Kitchen or Laundry is an investment in comfort, value, and beauty. But enjoying those benefits for years to come hinges on adopting smart, consistent cleaning and care habits. As a general rule, always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions on caring & maintaining your fixtures, fittings, tiles & appliances.
From preventing mould in wet areas to protecting your benchtops from modern appliances like air fryers, here’s practical advice rooted in real-world know-how on keeping every part of your renovation in flawless condition.
Bathroom & Laundry Aftercare
Your Bathroom & Laundry endures daily exposure to water, steam, detergents, and temperature shifts. Thoughtful routines are your best line of defence for keeping everything sanitary, pristine, and free from preventable wear.
Silicone (Joints in Wet Areas and Joinery)
Silicone is the unsung hero that seals joints between tiles, vanities, benchtops, and basins. Treat it gently to maintain its waterproof power and flexibility.
- Never use bleach or harsh chemicals: they break down silicone, causing it to harden, peel, or split.
- Don’t use abrasive pads/brushes: these create tiny scratches, harbour mould, and degrade performance.
- Ventilation matters: Always run your exhaust fan during and after each shower to keep moisture and mould at bay.
Grout (Walls & Floors)
Grout keeps tiles in place and moisture out, but it’s porous and vulnerable to stains and erosion if not properly cared for.
- Steam cleaning: Only for flawless epoxy grout not for regular sanded grout.
- Scrub gently with a soft brush and mild cleaner weekly. For deep cleans, a bicarb soda paste (with water) works well.
- In kitchens: Clean up spills immediately to prevent staining, especially on splash-backs or light grout.
As a general guide, it’s also recommended that showers are regrouted every 5–7 years, and silicone joints are refreshed every 2–5 years, depending on usage and age. Based on the age of your Bathroom, it may be due for this kind of maintenance. Also, unless specified otherwise, never use acidic cleaners (like vinegar or lemon) as these erode grout and degrade sealants.

Tiles and Natural Stone
Tiles (especially in showers) and any natural stone (like marble and travertine) look best with regular, gentle care.
- Wipe or rinse tiles after each use, especially in showers, to remove soap and water spots before they set.
- Weekly, use a soft cloth and pH-neutral cleaner mild detergent in warm water is ideal.
- Natural, eco option: Dish soap with warm water works well for general wipe-downs.
- For natural stone: Only use stone-safe, pH-balanced cleaners. Always dry with a soft towel and re-seal every 1–2 years for extra protection.
Avoid: Vinegar, lemon, bleach on any tiles or grout; steel wool or harsh brushes, especially on matt/patterned tiles; letting water or soap scum sit.
Shower Screens
Shower screens are designed to reduce splashing, but aren’t fully watertight. Glass and metal frames also expand and contract with weather and temperature.
- Daily: Use a squeegee, dry frames/seals, ventilate after use.
- Weekly: Clean with pH-neutral/vinegar-water solution, wipe with microfibre, clean tracks and seals.
- Avoid: Bleach, harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaning pads, plus leaving water on metal components.

Laundry Appliances: Keeping Your Washing Machine and Dryer Clean
Keeping your laundry appliances in top shape not only improves hygiene but also extends their lifespan. Here are some simple but vital steps:
- Wipe down doors and seals: Moisture left around rubber door seals can cause mould. After every wash, use a dry cloth to wipe down the door, seals, and detergent drawer.
- Leave doors open between uses: Allowing airflow helps dry out the interior, preventing mould and musty smells.
- Run regular cleaning cycles: At least once a month, run a hot cycle with a washing machine cleaner (or a cup of white vinegar if permitted by your manufacturer) to flush out detergent and grime build-up.
- Clean lint filters in dryers: After each use, remove lint from the dryer’s filter to ensure safe, efficient operation.
- Vacuum behind and underneath: Dust, lint, and hair can collect behind and beneath these appliances, use a vacuum periodically to keep the space tidy and avoid blockages.
- Check and clean hoses: Inspect flexible hoses and vents every few months for blockages, cracks, or leaks.
- Don’t overload: Following manufacturer guidelines for load limits will help both appliances clean/dry your laundry more effectively and protect their hardware.
Kitchen Aftercare
Kitchens see tough, daily action spills, heat, food stains, and strong cleaning products. Benchtops and appliances are especially vulnerable to heat and chemical damage, especially from modern gadgets like air fryers.
Benchtops, Splashbacks, and Air Fryer Placement
Your benchtop is a centrepiece, and it needs the right care especially when using today’s popular benchtop appliances.

Protecting Against Heat Damage (Including Air Fryers)
Air fryers and similar appliances can get very hot and are often set directly onto benchtops, which can cause cracks or warping especially in engineered stone or laminates when exposed to sudden temperature changes.
- Never put a hot air fryer or similar appliance directly on the surface. Always use a trivet or cooled chopping board underneath.
- Don’t set appliances hard up against splashbacks or tiled walls: The heat can cause cracking, warping, or even loosen tiles and grout. Always allow a gap for proper air-flow and expansion.
- Never go from very hot to very cold: For example, putting something icy on a hot benchtop surface, as this rapid shift can cause materials to crack.
General benchtop tips: Use only pH-neutral cleaners, dry thoroughly after cleaning, and refer to your benchtop manufacturer’s care instructions for finish-specific guidance.

Kitchen Appliance Care
Appliances work better and last longer with routine maintenance. Each type has its quirks; following universal and specific care tips helps avoid performance loss (or voiding warranties).
General Appliance Tips:
- Always follow the included cleaning/care instructions.
- Clean exteriors weekly with pH-neutral, non-abrasive cleaners.
- Keep vents and seals clean to prevent build-up and overheating.
- Don’t spray cleaner directly onto digital panels or stainless steel; always spray onto the cloth first.
- Avoid bleach, ammonia, vinegar, and abrasive pads/creams unless your manual specifically allows.
- Check and clean filters regularly, particularly dishwashers and rangehoods.
Highlights:
- Cooktops (Induction, Gas, Ceramic): Microfibre only for glass/induction, clean burners and trivets carefully.
- Ovens: Wipe after each use, use self-clean carefully, avoid harsh scraping tools.
- Rangehoods: Soak filters monthly, wipe outside regularly, replace charcoal filters as needed.
- Fridges: Interior wipe down monthly, clean seals, vacuum coils every 6 months.
- Dishwashers: Clean cycle monthly, check filters weekly, leave the door ajar for drying.
Coffee Machines: Descale as advised, clean the milk system after each use.
For Air Fryers: As above, protect your benchtop and leave a gap to tiled walls, and wipe the exterior weekly.

General Aftercare
Your taps, mixers, mirrors, and specialty fixtures all require thoughtful cleaning suited to their materials.
Fixtures & Tapware
- Wipe regularly with microfibre and warm water.
- pH-neutral cleaners only.
- Dry after use to prevent mineral and water spots great for specialty finishes!
- Check manufacturer advice for brass, black, or “living” finishes.
Never: Use bleach, vinegar, ammonia, or rough scouring pads (even “gentle” ones); don’t leave soap or toothpaste residue sitting.

Material Specifics:
- Matte black/coloured: Wipe gently, always dry, avoid wax-based products.
- Brass/gold/bronze: If coated, treat like chrome; if raw/living, allow patina or follow the manufacturer’s polishing advice.
- Ceramic/porcelain (toilets, basins): Soft cloth, mild detergent.
Mirrors & Shaving Cabinets
Mould and Mirror Silvering
Bathrooms are full of moisture, and things like mould or the silver backing on mirrors can be affected by how the space is used, cleaned, and ventilated. Because these things are different in every home and out of our control once we finish, we can’t include them in our warranty.
- Never use ammonia cleaners: Causes black spotting (“desilvering”) and degrades adhesives.
- Don’t soak edges: Liquid can seep behind the glass and damage backing.
- Gently wipe with a mild, ammonia-free cleaner on a cloth.
