A bathroom upgrade is one of the most satisfying projects you can do in your home, but it is also one of the most regulated and technically demanding. At Novalé, we spend as much time getting the “rules” right as we do choosing tiles and tapware.
When waterproofing, fall, ventilation and layout are handled properly from the start, you end up with a bathroom that looks good, works well and keeps performing years down the track.
Rule 1: Respect the bones of the building
Every successful bathroom starts with an honest look at the structure you are working with. That means checking joist directions, wall framing, existing plumbing runs and ceiling heights before locking in a design. Pushing a layout too far against what the building allows usually leads to compromises later, or unexpected costs when demolition reveals surprises.
Our approach is to design with the structure, not against it. Where it makes sense to move plumbing, we will, but we will also tell you when a modest tweak achieves the same result for less disruption. This is where experience across hundreds of Sydney bathrooms really counts.
Rule 2: Get falls and waterproofing right
Water is unforgiving. If it cannot flow where it should, it will find its own path. Australian Standards set out clear requirements for waterproofing and floor falls, and we treat those as minimums, not targets. Properly graded floors towards wastes and fully compliant membranes behind tiles are non negotiable in every Novalé project.
It is easy to underestimate how much planning goes into this. Tile sizes, threshold details and even the style of shower screen all influence how we set falls.
Our teams work closely with waterproofers and tilers so the finished bathroom feels level where it should, while still moving water exactly where it needs to go.
Rule 3: Prioritise ventilation from day one
Ventilation is sometimes treated as an afterthought, but it is one of the key rules of a healthy bathroom. Without adequate extraction and air movement, steam lingers, mould takes hold and even the best finishes deteriorate faster than they should.
Simply upgrading tiles without addressing ventilation is a false economy.
When we design a bathroom, we factor in fan capacity, duct runs and, where possible, natural ventilation through windows or skylights. In apartments, that might mean upgrading to a more powerful in‑line system. In houses, it might mean combining a new fan with a slightly larger or better positioned window.
The goal is a bathroom that dries out quickly after every use.
Rule 4: Think circulation, not just fixtures
A common mistake in DIY designs is focusing on fitting a wishlist of fixtures into the room, rather than how people will actually move through the space. Doors that swing into vanities, toilets squeezed against walls and showers that feel cramped are all signs that circulation was an afterthought.
We design with clear movement lines: space to turn, room to towel off, storage positioned where you need it. Sometimes that means choosing a more compact bath, shifting a door opening or opting for a wall hung toilet to free up precious centimetres.
Comfort in a bathroom comes as much from what you do not bump into as from what you see.
Rule 5: Plan storage as part of the architecture
Clutter quickly undermines even the most beautiful bathroom. One of our golden rules is to plan storage from the beginning, not patch it in at the end. Recessed mirrored cabinets, in‑wall niches, deep vanity drawers and tall cabinets that tie into the overall design keep everyday items within reach but out of sight.
We also think vertically. In smaller bathrooms, going up the wall with storage can make the difference between a bench that stays clear and one that is always covered in bottles.
The aim is a layout where everyone in the household has a logical place for their things, so the room stays as calm on Monday morning as it looks on handover day.
Rule 6: Choose fixtures that match how you live
Not every trend belongs in every home. Freestanding baths look amazing in photos, but if you mostly shower and have young kids, a generous walk in shower with a hand shower may serve you better. Likewise, ultra minimal tapware can be harder to use for older family members or people with limited mobility.
As designers, our job is to ask how you actually use the space, not just what you like on Instagram.
From there, we can recommend fixtures, tapware and layouts that feel good in everyday life – easier cleaning, intuitive controls and practical heights – as well as looking the part.
Rule 7: Invest where it counts, save where you can
Every project has a budget, and part of our job is helping you spend it where it makes the biggest difference. As a rule, we encourage clients to invest in what is hard to change later: waterproofing, plumbing, layout, quality tapware and good lighting.
You can always update accessories and even some fittings down the track, but fixing structural shortcuts is far more expensive.
That does not mean every choice has to be top‑end. There are many smart ways to save: using feature tiles in key areas only, choosing mid‑range fixtures with solid warranties, or keeping plumbing in similar locations.
A well planned upgrade feels considered and cohesive, not compromised.
